“You have no idea how ‘handy’ this card came in this week. We were vacationing in Leavenworth and Alexis went lethargic and very ill, the local hospital couldn’t help her, we had to be moved by ambulance to Wenatchee hospital. Every time someone asked about her ‘history’ I handed them the card. It saved me so much ‘thinking’ remembering, and stress at a very stressful time! THANK YOU so much!”
- Alexis' Mom

SCORE cards allow families to tell their story and trade with others they meet along the way. They empower families to tell their story in their own way. Patients can give their cards to providers that work at Children’s, other patients, friends and family back home or acquaintances that are just learning about their journey. Uniting through SCORE cards might make families feel more connected and cared for. For patients who permit Guild use of their cards, they will put a local face to this disease to compel community support and research fundraising.

Possible patient SCORE card uses:

  • Help patients connect with their care team by trading with them
  • Trading with other patients to keep in touch throughout treatment
  • Giving to friends and family back home
  • Distributing to anyone interested in learning more about their story
  • Event announcements for patient birthdays, graduations, end of treatment parties

“The SCORE cards are a wonderful resource. Parents are overwhelmed with all of the new faces and roles during the early weeks of cancer treatment. The cards will undoubtedly help put names with the faces and alleviate some of the stress that comes with learning to navigate a complex organization.”
- Jackson's Mom

These SCORE cards help families remember the several people they meet on their care team, identify their role, and connect via fun facts about each provider to make the experience more personal. Families must often travel to a new place to receive treatment and are simply overwhelmed by the diagnosis and the number of new people they meet during the multidisciplinary experience. Introductions are often made quickly and it is not always clear who is doing what for the patient. Not all family members are present for the entirety of each visit and having a card that includes a photograph to remember who plays what role could help everyone involved understand how many people are on their team. The fun facts on the back of each card (pets, for example) might provide opportunities for patients to connect with their care team to make the experience less medical. We believe that children are never too sick to have fun.

Local research requires philanthropic support. About 47% of Seattle Children’s Oncology Research Enterprise (SCORE) staffing is funded by donations. Dedicated SCORE staff is required to do the paperwork needed to open clinical trials to improve cancer treatments. The SCORE has enrolled more patients to Children’s Oncology Group (COG) studies than any other hospital in the world. In addition to COG, the SCORE is involved with the COG Phase 1 Consortium, the Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia group, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium and the New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy group. Through these groups, local discoveries have been brought to children treated at hundreds of hospitals. Since 2000, 9 national clinical trials were written by SCORE doctors. The SCORE is a collaborative group dedicated to advancing childhood cancer research as fast as possible. Through collaborative research, most SCORE patients have tumor samples sent to national research labs to help learn as much as possible about how to fight their disease.

Without donor support, SCORE doctors would not have the staff they need to operate the research program while providing the best care available to the approximately 250 children diagnosed at Seattle Children’s each year. Funds raised by the We Keep SCORE Guild are directed toward local cancer research efforts which influence childhood cancer outcomes worldwide. Unlike national charities, the We Keep SCORE Guild does not have employee or marketing expenses. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your support. We are keeping SCORE in the fight for childhood cancer. Cancer will lose.
